The Price Objection Myth
Every door-to-door rep has been there. You have spent ten minutes building rapport, you have delivered a perfect pitch, and you have explained the benefits of your product. Then, the homeowner looks you in the eye and says, "It is just too expensive."
Most reps freeze or start listing discounts. This is a mistake. When a homeowner says your price is too high, they are rarely talking about money. They are talking about value. They do not yet see the solution to their problem being worth more than the cash in their pocket.
Why Price is Rarely the Real Issue
If your prospect had a massive, immediate problem that you could solve, they would find the money. If their roof were actively leaking into their living room, they would not haggle over the price of a tarp.
When price becomes the primary objection, it means you have not successfully identified or amplified their pain point. You are selling a product rather than a solution.
The Pivot Technique
Instead of justifying your price, you must shift the conversation back to the problem. Your goal is to move from a transaction-focused mindset to a value-focused one.
"I hear you. Many of my clients felt the same way at first. But let me ask you, if we could actually stop the pest issues in your kitchen permanently, what is that peace of mind worth compared to the DIY sprays that never work?"
Three Steps to Disarm the Objection
1. Acknowledge and Validate
Never argue. If you tell them they are wrong, you lose. Acknowledge their concern with a simple, calm statement. This lowers their defensive guard.
2. Isolate the Concern
Ask if price is the only thing standing in the way of a deal. This reveals if they are just using price as a generic brush-off or if they have other hidden reservations.
3. Re-Anchor the Value
Remind them of the specific pain points you discussed earlier. Contrast the cost of your service against the cost of inaction.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Dropping the price too early: If you lower the price as soon as they mention money, you signal that your product is not worth the full amount.
- Defending the price: Do not explain your overhead or your company's marketing costs. The customer does not care about your expenses; they care about their own wallet.
- Ignoring the emotional need: Every home service solves an emotional frustration—fear of bugs, desire for convenience, or the need for security. If you ignore these, price becomes the only metric left to judge by.
Practice Makes Perfect
Field success comes from consistency. You should have three "value stories" ready to deploy at all times. A value story is a short anecdote about a previous neighbor who had the same concerns but saw a massive return on their investment after working with you.
When you share a story about how their neighbor John saved money on energy bills or stopped recurring alarm triggers, you move the prospect from "Why should I spend this?" to "Why haven't I done this sooner?"
If you find yourself stuck in a cycle of objections, take a step back and analyze your discovery questions. You might find that you are pitching to the wrong problems.
Once you master the ability to redirect the conversation from cost to value, you will find that the price objection becomes the easiest one to handle.
